I was not there when this happened, but oh man did my heart melt when Rob called to tell me about it. I don't want to forget this, so if you need a little sweet moment today, enjoy!

Rob and Evie handled the grocery shopping last week, which Rob normally does. In one store, they came across a local middle school SPED class who was doing a scavenger hunt. One sweet girl, Catherine, came up to Evie with one of her teachers and said "She's my sister! She's special like me!" Evie reached out to give "knuckles" because that's her favorite way to say hi. Catherine gushed about Evie and enjoyed the knuckles and smiles before returning to her class. It wasn't long before the class found their way to Evie, who started giving out knuckles like Oprah: "YOU get knuckles! YOU get knuckles!" You can imagine how fun this must have been for Rob and the other adults to watch. Rob said there were several kids in that class with Trisomy21, which further warms my heart because on this tiny island, they have each other. They aren't alone in school.

Rob said that Evie was supercharged after this and spent the rest of the shopping experience handing out knuckles to anyone and everyone.

When he called me, it brought so many happy tears to my eyes. I love that she experienced that connection, even if she didn't understand it. I love that Catherine and the other kids in the class got to experience Evie. I am so grateful for Catherine's recognition of her "sister". I am also always so grateful when other people notice her, smile, and especially if they are willing to reciprocate knuckles.
